Chicago Certification
SAFER USA was the first firearm school to develop a course that satisfies the City of Chicago requirements and the first school whose graduates received the city approval.
According to the City of Chicago Department of Police Rules and Regulations Firearms – Chapter 8-20, the course must be five hours long including one hour on the range but there is no criteria for successful completion. The requirements are vague and open to interpretation.
Rule 2 Training
2.2 The firearm safety and training course shall consist of 1 hour of range training and 4 hours of classroom training, which shall include all of the following:
(a) Instruction in the dangers of and misuse of firearms, and their care, cleaning and storage and safety rules.
(b) Practice firing on a range with live ammunition.
(c) Instruction in the legal use of firearms; and
(d) A presentation of the ethical and moral considerations necessary for any person who possesses a firearm.
Consequently, many training providers are offering bare bones instruction for the sole purpose of making money and completing students with the least amount of effort as possible. What concerns us most at SAFER USA is new firearm owners are not being trained in the important issues surrounding the use of a firearm in the home. The very mechanics of how to make your home a hard target: One that will reduce the likelihood of a home invasion in the first place.
What’s also not being taught are the tactical issues regarding what type of firearm should be used and how to protect yourself not only from criminal prosecution but also from civil suit in the aftermath.
For the average home owner there are very few appropriate firearms for personal protection in the home. We provide .22 caliber firearms and ammunition for the range portion but also make other, larger caliber firearms available afterwords so you can try them out. More important, we give you guidance on what would be the most appropriate firearm for you. We will also accompany you to a gun store and help you choose an appropriate firearm at no additional cost. It is critical to understand that choosing the right firearm for home defense, one that may be necessary to defend you and your family in a life threatening situation, is far more complex than putting your dad’s old gun in your nightstand.
